The flowers are dying.

This was something I’d written a year ago.  I just came across it.

Looking at flowers, my three year old asks, “why are they melting?”

“The are decaying, its part of life.”  I say.

“What is decay mommy?  Are they dying?  Will I die?”

“We all die.  It’s a natural part of life.”

“When will I die?”

“Not for a long time.  First you are a baby, then a kid, and you grow up like mommy and daddy, then grandma and grandpa and then much later you die.”

“Will you die?”

“Yes.  We all do.”

“Will you be with me when I grow up?”

“Yes, honey we will always be with you.”

Children go right to the heart of it all without even trying.  They are amazing.  Have you had conversations about tough topics with your kids?  What were they?  I’d love to know!

  1. Aw man, I LOVE that kitchen towel! I don’t have a Facebook account. I donated. May I be entered anyway?? Please please? Alpha Hubby would absolutely love that towel!

I had so many strange and wonderous conversations with my son, it’s hard to pinpoint one. I remember one about “do dogs go to heaven.” Of course they do. If there are horses in heaven (there are), there are all sorts of animals!

    • Nan, You are getting that towel. I will still give one away to my readers but I am going to make one for you, too:) Cause you rock!

I think God has a very special greeting for animals:) They certainly deserve to have all the unconditional love they give returned to them. Except cats. Just kidding!! Oh no, I hope my cat lover friend doesn’t see that. Haha!

  2. Pamela says:

Go get ‘em Kjersti. And I love the post. At the age my kids are, the questions go more like
    “Mom, why can’t I have the ____?”
“Because we aren’t made of money.”
“But why aren’t we made of money?”
“Because you have to work for money.”
“Can you work more then so I can have the money?”
    :-)

    • Haha, Pamela. I hear those questions too! That question always makes me think of Gar Coleman from Different Strokes. A child star who had so much money that when he had spent it all, or other people spent it, he said, “Can’t we just write another check?”

  3. Maren says:

Thanks Sis. I can’t wait to get it!!!!!

I remember when my kids asked such lovely questions and made such beautiful connections. Now I see them (all teenagers) putting their life lessons (and Mom’s lessons) to test and making good decisions, standing up for themselves and learning to take pride in their choices. Makes a mama proud.

    • Well done:) I truly hope I am encouraging them more and more so they can make those wise decision in the future. Right now those questions are just so pure and simple. They renew my own beliefs:)
