One of my friends posted on Facebook that her 9-year-old daughter called her fat.  I giggled at the smart-alec  things kids say.  I left the comment, “Little smarty pants.”
But another of our friends said something like, “I think someone needs to go to her room for a while.  She shouldn’t talk to her mom that way.”
And it hit me.
He was right.
What she said wasn’t cute or funny or something to be laughed at.  It was disrespectful.

When my daughter went in at 18-months-old for surgery to have her adenoids removed, and my husband, her daddy, came with, I cried in the waiting room.  Not because I worried about her surgery.  They were tears of relief.  A sadness I unknowingly clung to nearly my entire life rose to the surface then released, as if a window were opened on my chest and a dozen butterflies fluttered to their freedom.
